{"id":68413,"date":"2026-01-23T11:54:21","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T09:54:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fondazioneguidovenosta.org\/en\/?p=68413"},"modified":"2026-01-23T16:40:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T14:40:15","slug":"rats-carcasses-and-cannibalism-at-a-pig-farm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fondazioneguidovenosta.org\/en\/rats-carcasses-and-cannibalism-at-a-pig-farm\/","title":{"rendered":"Rats, carcasses and cannibalism at a pig farm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Excerpt from\u00a0<em>Il Fatto Alimentare<\/em>: forty days after Greenpeace published a video showing dozens of rats inside the sheds of a pig farm whose animals were destined for La Pellegrina\u2019s Prosciutto PDO supply chain\u2014a company controlled by the Veronesi Group (AIA)\u2014new footage reports similarly serious conditions at another facility linked to the same company in Bondeno, in the province of Ferrara, at a farm owned by Societ\u00e0 Agricola Allevamenti Cascone, a contract supplier under a\u00a0<em>soccida<\/em>\u00a0arrangement (*) to La Pellegrina.<\/p>\n<p>Photos and videos verified by Greenpeace also document, in this case, a rat infestation throughout the facility and in the pens where the pigs are kept. Conditions are disastrous: pigs with severe wounds, hernias, lacerations to ears, and tails that are often bitten and mutilated. The images show carcasses left abandoned in an advanced state of decomposition, being eaten by other pigs, and clear signs of inflammation consistent with prolonged contact with feces and urine\u2026<\/p>\n<p>(*)\u00a0<em>Soccida<\/em>\u00a0is a contract between a farmer (in this case, Cascone) and a contracting party (in this case, La Pellegrina). Under the contract, the farmer receives weaned piglets, feed, and sometimes medicines from the contracting party, and is responsible for raising the animals.
