Guido Venosta – The importance of English
“My father, who foresaw the future with great wisdom, believed that I should learn English perfectly. He thought that since nearly the entire advanced world of that time spoke English, all scientific developments in the immediate future would be expressed in English. Hence his decision that I spend all my summer vacations during middle and high school in England. After making the necessary contacts, a family willing to host me in Ascot, Berkshire, was found. (…) The house—a large cottage standing on a meticulously mowed, lush green lawn—featured a tennis court where countless matches were played with unpredictable outcomes. (…) During these stays in England, I was usually entrusted to the care of Mr. Lombardini, the Manager of the Pirelli House in London, who provided me with the few means I required and, above all, introduced me to some of London’s most renowned restaurants, which astonished me with their magnificence and the efficiency of their service. (…)”
