The Climate Crisis Is Reshaping the Mediterranean Seabed, Threatening Its Ecosystem

“…Distribution projections show that up to 60% of species may experience a contraction of their geographic range, while 77% are expected to migrate northward. In addition, 30% of the species analysed will shift towards deeper waters, and around 20% will face increasing habitat fragmentation.”

“More specifically,” Baldan continues, “the study identified a greater tendency for range contraction and movement towards deeper waters among species adapted to colder thermal conditions, which therefore face a higher risk of fragmentation or extinction. Conversely, species adapted to warmer conditions are projected to expand their range and migrate towards shallower waters.”

All these processes serve as a warning signal: they entail a significant increase in the risk of local extinction.
