Listeria monocytogenes infections are increasing worldwide

Infections caused by Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium capable of surviving at low temperatures and particularly associated with foods such as soft cheeses, certain fruits and vegetables, unpasteurised milk and smoked fish, are increasing worldwide.

In Europe, where incidence rose from 0.4 to 0.69 cases per 100,000 inhabitants between 2010 and 2024, Listeria infections account for 32% of all deaths associated with foodborne outbreaks. The case-fatality rate of the disease is in fact very high, at 15.6%, and it mainly affects people with more vulnerable immune systems, such as the elderly and pregnant women…
