Oceans keep getting warmer: global sea surface temperature record broken on 22 August

Article published on 28/09/2026 -

The daily average global sea surface temperature reached 21.1°C, surpassing the previous record set in March 2024. The figure is even more significant because it was recorded in August, when global ocean temperatures are normally well below their annual peak.

The new record is part of the long-term warming trend driven by human activities, now being compounded by the development of a strong El Niño.
