Key Figures

Guido Venosta
Third Sector Manager and Entrepreneur, widely regarded as the “founding force behind AIRC”1
Born in Milan in 1911, Guido Venosta earned a degree in Economics from Cambridge and a Law degree from the University of Pavia.
In 1966, he began collaborating with the newly established AIRC (Italian Association for Cancer Research), first as Vice President in 1967, and later as President from 1976.
In 1979, he promoted the establishment of the Italian Foundation for Cancer Research (FIRC), created to safeguard AIRC’s assets and ensure its long-term mission.
Venosta remained actively involved with AIRC for 32 years, stepping down from the presidency of both organizations in 1996 and continuing as Honorary President until his death in 1998.
Thanks to his vision and leadership, AIRC grew and thrived, earning him widespread recognition as the “distinguished founder of the Italian Association for Cancer Research.”
His greatest strengths were his managerial acumen—developed over 38 years at Pirelli Spa, from 1939 to 1977—and his entrepreneurial mindset, which he applied to the world of philanthropy. He believed that solidarity should be organized strategically, capable of generating substantial and sustained funding, not only to support major research projects but also to guarantee a steady flow of resources for scientific advancement.
For his work with AIRC, Venosta received numerous accolades, including the Medal of Merit for Public Health.
In his honor, the biennial Guido Venosta Award is presented to outstanding young Italian researchers who have made significant contributions to the development of new therapeutic approaches to cancer.
“If Italian cancer research today stands at the forefront of the international stage, a great deal of credit goes to Guido Venosta.”
— Umberto Veronesi and Giuseppe Della Porta, Fondamentale, April 5, 1998

Carla Fossati Bellani Venosta
Founder and Creator of the Guido Venosta Foundation
Born in Monza in 1924, Carla Fossati Bellani Venosta earned a degree in Architecture from the Polytechnic University of Milan and, in 1971, began her professional journey as a designer, dedicating herself to product design, exhibition layouts, and artisanal craftsmanship.
A highly active member of ADI (Association for Industrial Design), she served on its Executive Committee from 1991 to 1992 and was twice awarded the prestigious Compasso d’Oro.
She also served as Vice President of ICSID (now the World Design Organization) and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Triennale di Milano in both 1983 and 1992.
In 2000, honoring her express wishes, the Guido Venosta Foundation was established in memory of her second husband.
It was also at her initiative that the “Il Ponte” (The Bridge) award was created—intended for “those who have managed to unite two seemingly opposing worlds, strengthening each within their own sphere of action,” driven by the conviction that “bridges connect lands, peoples, experiences, and different cultures, becoming the very foundation of dialogue and exchange.”

Giorgina Venosta
Entrepreneur and Manager, Member of the Board of the Guido Venosta Foundation
Officially registered as Giorgia Umberta, daughter of Guido Venosta, she built a distinguished career at the intersection of business, art, and culture.
She began her professional journey at Corriere della Sera, before taking on the role of director of the Milan branch of Christie’s, one of the world’s most prestigious auction houses, where she served as an executive.
Driven by a deep passion for the arts, she co-founded the company Consulenza d’Arte with two partners, continuing her work in the cultural market. She was recognized as a respected art expert, with a specialization in gemology.
Over the years, she served on the Board of Directors of the Guido Venosta Foundation, to which she gave a constant and passionate contribution.
It was she who, during the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic, passed the torch of the Foundation to her son, Giuseppe Caprotti, ensuring continuity with the same spirit of dedication, care, and responsibility that had always guided her.

Giuseppe Caprotti
President of the Guido Venosta Foundation, entrepreneur, historical author and expert in retail and nutrition
Giuseppe Caprotti was born in Milan on December 15, 1960.
He earned a degree in Contemporary History from the Sorbonne in Paris, where he conducted a major research project on the political, economic, and historical context of South Tyrol—later published by Franco Angeli.
He held senior leadership positions at Esselunga S.p.A. for 19 years, playing a key role in shaping the company’s strategic and organizational growth.
During his time with the group, he served as Executive, Head of Non-Food Purchasing, Director of Marketing and Communications, Chief Commercial Officer (with direct responsibility for Purchasing and Marketing), Chief Operating Officer, and ultimately CEO.
Among his most significant contributions was the launch of Esselunga’s first social responsibility report, published in 2003—an innovative milestone in the Italian retail sector.
After leaving the company, he focused on strategic consulting, working with prominent organizations such as Bain & Company, Messaggerie Italiane S.p.A., Aspiag, and others.
In 2023, he published his second book, Le ossa dei Caprotti, with Feltrinelli.
Alongside his managerial and publishing activities, he has been deeply committed to public education on healthy eating, conscious consumption, and the sustainability of the agri-food supply chain—topics he explores through publications, lectures, and awareness-raising initiatives.
He is currently Vice President of the Lombard Historical Society and, since 2020, President of the Guido Venosta Foundation, where he has led the development of projects with significant social and scientific impact.
